English literature tuition

I offer tuition on English Literature at GCSE, GCE Advanced and undergraduate levels.

I have a first class BA (Hons) in English Literature from Cardiff University and I'm the author of the book Studying Poetry, which is written for A level and beginning undergraduate students and has been in print now for well over a decade.

I am especially strong on intellectual context and enjoy working with students to shed light on a text through contemporary influences from painting, music, architecture, politics and philosophy as well as developing an understanding of an author's sources and influences.

My areas of particular strength are

  • Chaucer
  • Shakespeare and other Elizabethan and Jacobean drama
  • Seventeenth century poetry (e.g. Marvell, Donne, Herrick, Milton, Dryden)
  • English and German Romanticism (not German language)
  • The realist novel (e.g. Eliot, Dickens)
  • Victorian poetry (e.g. Tennyson, Browning, Swinburne, Hopkins, Hardy)
  • Modernism (e.g. T S Eliot, Pound, Joyce, Woolf)
  • Surrealism, Dada and other post-war avant gardes
  • Postmodernism and the contemporary novel

I also have a strong background in literary theory including

  • New criticism
  • Structuralism (Saussure, Levi-Strauss)
  • Semiotics (Peirce, Barthes)
  • Psychoanalysis (Freud, Jung, Lacan, Guattari)
  • Hermeneutics (Gadamer, Ricoeur)
  • Poststructuralism (Derrida)
  • Postmodernism (Lyotard, Deleuze, Baudrillard, Zizek)
  • Feminism (Kristeva, Irigaray, Cixous)
  • Marxism (Marx, Gramsci, Marcuse, Adorno, Althusser)

These are indicative subjects only -- let me know if you need help with something different.
